Dear Families,
Term 2 is well underway, with improved attendance rates. Please keep encouraging your child to attend school every day, as all learning is important. When a child misses a day of school it becomes stressful for the child - not only do they have the work they missed to learn, but also the work planned for that day too. As learning is sequential, with every step important for developing skills and understanding, missing school is a recipe for falling behind. If your child is sick or has another genuinely important reason for missing a day of school on the odd occasion, of course we understand. However, the learning doesn't stop. In this day of COVID, all sick staff and students will be sent home in line with government advice and regulations - making it even more important to attend whenever possible. As you are aware, there is an excursion to Arid Recovery planned for Friday Week 5 - it will be disappointing for any children who miss out due to poor attendance.
We have your child's best interests at heart, and we are working tirelessly to help them succeed in all areas of their learning. As the term progresses, your child's teacher may be in contact with you to discuss how they are tracking with their learning, and any steps your child might need to take to meet the Achievement Standard for their year level. You are the most important adults in your child's lives: through partnership with you, we can help your children soar. Keep an eye out for information around how we teach reading, a twilight event for parents, later this term.
I encourage you to head into the library and have a look at the work completed over the school holidays. The walls have been painted, Elissa has rearranged the shelving to create reading nooks, and we are actively seeking ideas for activities and events you would like to see in our library for you and your family.
Please make sure you read through the important dates outlied in the "For Your Calendar" section. We are excited to announce a joint Sport's Day will be happening with Woomera Area School in Week 9, and watch this space for another celebration of attendance later this term.
Warmest regards,
Morwenna Stanford
Principal
For the past few weeks, students have been exploring the components of persuasive texts. They have stated their opinions about given statements, and shared their point of view with their peers, through conversations about why they are for or against the statement. The students have used a scaffold to help them structure and write their own persuasive writing pieces.
I asked the students what the purpose of persuasive writing is, and these were their responses:
Julian- “To tell people our opinions and what we actually think.”
Alicia- “To convince someone that something is happening, like something bad is going to happen and you should be scared.”
Samuel- “So other people can agree with you and be on your side.”
Lauren- “To sway someone to have the same opinion as you.”
Every Friday morning the whole school joins together for Maths. The last two weeks, we have been focusing on counting whilst working on our addition strategies. Last week we focused on the story of ‘One is a Snail and Ten is a Crab’. Students really enjoyed the counting strategies presented in the book and were able to identify the pattern associated with skip counting. After reading the book the students had the opportunity to make crabs to represent that crabs have ten claws. We then used the crabs and the other animals in the book to solve a range of problems.
We have been busy over the holidays in the library. If you haven't been in yet come and have a look at what we have done!
Watch this space for more exciting things that we have in store.
We've been working with the children to make the library as inviting as possible.
Meet from left to right Bubbles, Coco and Toffee! The names were chosen by the students: these three are here to provide comfort and entertainment to anyone who needs them.
